Raising 1,500 Brook Trout

The District education team is hard at work prepping trout tanks for our schools. Each tank setup needs a filter, thermometer, foam board insulation for all six sides, and a specialty chiller that can keep the tanks around 3-4 degrees Celsius/37-39 degrees Fahrenheit to mimic our Maine winter stream conditions.

In January, three participating Portland schools will attend a curriculum training, set up their five tanks by the middle of the month, and begin their trout lessons. Each tank will receive about 300 eyed eggs in early February.

Take a virtual tour to meet Casco Fish Hatchery staff and see where your brook trout start growing!
