How Are We Impacting Natural Resources?
That is the question 7th grade students at Lyman Moore Middle School are asking different presenters around the community each Monday as part of their Human Impact speaker series.
In March, the students met Doug Roncarati, one of the City of Portland’s Stormwater Program Coordinators to learn how humans are impacting water resources through development, improper use and disposal of common water pollutants, and other actions. The students learned about the City’s stormwater infrastructure, improvement projects around the city, and ways to reduce stormwater pollution.
In April, the students met Ali Clift, the Cumberland County Soil & Water Conservation District’s Education and Outreach Coordinator, to learn about soil and water conservation practices. The students connected their previous lessons and presentations to discuss how human actions can build and destroy healthy soil, contribute and prevent water pollutants, pursue careers in the environmental fields, and protect the environment in their everyday lives.
