Lyman Moore Students Learn About Their Local Ecosystems

The 7th grade students at Lyman Moore Middle School received lessons from Ali about water pollution and ways to measure water quality. The classes compared various pollutants to determine which has the worst affect on water. They were also shown examples of macroinvertebrates that are used to assess the health of our local rivers.

Teachers Margaret Paisley and Amy Reed are raising monarch butterflies with their classes this fall. And in the spring, these same students will be raising brook trout in their classrooms!

It’s an exciting time to be a science student in Portland schools!

These lessons are funded by the City of Portland through the Greener Neighborhoods Cleaner Streams program and led by the Cumberland County Soil & Water Conservation District.
