Portland Parks & Recreation Students Create Stormwater Education Artwork

The COVID-19 pandemic didn't stop Portland students from learning about the importance of clean water! Once a week, two members from Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District met with elementary students attending the Portland Parks Recreation, and Facilities after-school programs at East End Community Center, Harrison Lyseth Elementary School, Reiche Community Center, and Riverton Community Center.

The students learned about about the water cycle, how water gets polluted, and how healthy water plays a crucial role in a healthy ecosystem. Knowing how important it is to keep pollutants out of our stormwater, the students completed a trash cleanup along trails near their schools to ensure none of the litter ended up down the storm drain!

In addition to a litter cleanup, the students also completed service learning projects to educate the public on where water that goes down a storm drain ends up, and the effects polluted stormwater can have on water quality and aquatic life. Check out some of the clean water murals the students designed and painted!
