What's a Watershed?

A watershed is an area of land, where all of the water that falls in it, flows downhill to the same waterbody. This could be a stream, river, pond, lake, or ocean. Watersheds are named after the waterbody they drain into.

When water flows across the land it can pick up pollutants and carry them to a waterbody. This means what you do in your yard can harm the health of your local water. You can help keep your water clean by picking up after your pets and not using fertilizers or weed & bug killers.

Do you know what watershed you live in? Hint: You live in more than one!

The Capisic Watershed drains into Capisic Pond which drains to the Fore River and then Casco Bay.

Maine has 10 major watersheds. They all flow to the Gulf of Maine/Atlantic Ocean.
